Buddhist Altar Craft on Hikone’s Nanamagari Street
Last Monday was a national holiday in Japan (Health and Sports Day), which also coincided with the third annual festival for a 300-year-old local tradition of Japanese craftsmanship in the Nanamagari Street area of Hikone.
Japanese Buddhism has a long-standing tradition of keeping a Buddhist altar, called a butsudan, in one’s home for prayer and ceremonies, especially prayers to deceased ancestors. Some Buddhist ceremonies are held in the home, so the butsudan has traditionally been a necessity for Japanese households. Hikone city is home to one of the Kansai region’s most famous butsudan making communities, where all the artisans involved in crafting the altars have been living and working for the past few centuries.
We were introduced to Hikone’s butsudan neighborhood by one of the local sellers, Inoue Butsudan, who also invited us to participate in the town festival last week.
The festival allows visitors to join workshops and learn some of the crafts involved in bustudan making. Butsudans are basically very ornate cabinets, so wood-working and cabinet-making are the initial craft. But they also incorporate Japanese urushi lacquer painting (a traditional natural lacquer paint that comes from the urushi tree), gold-leafing/powdering, relief carving, gold plated metal fittings, etc. So a finished butsudan requires months of work from various artisans and has a pricing range similar to a car.
At the festival we joined one morning workshop, and a second workshop in the afternoon. The first was a lacquer and gold-powder painting workshop, and the second was chopstick decoration with a style of layered urushi lacquer used to create metal-like color effects. The urushi tree contains natural rash-causing toxins, but when creating lacquer, the toxins are removed (however, people with very sensitive skin might experience rash when working with urushi lacquer). There were also a few more workshops for gold-plating, relief carving and woodworking that we didn’t have time to join, but looked interesting as well.
I doubt our international readers have any intention of purchasing an actual butsudan, but they provide a really interesting look into the various crafts and religious practices of traditional Japanese life. So I recommend checking out this festival next year (we’ll try to post details in advance), or even just visiting the neighborhood in your free time. 七曲がりフェスタにて
先週月曜、日本は祝日（体育の日）でした。この日はちょうど、今年で３回目となる彦根の七曲がり通りで、３００年続くこの地域の伝統工芸をお祭りするイベントの日にあたりました
日本の仏教では、先祖をお祀りするため各家庭に仏壇と呼ばれる仏教の祭壇を持つことが長い伝統となっています。 仏教儀式を家で行うこともあるため、仏壇は日本の家庭には欠かせないものとなっています。 滋賀県彦根市は関西地域でも屈指の仏壇製造の拠点であり、ここでは過去何百年にもわたり仏壇を作りあげるため様々な職人たちが暮らし製作活動を行っています。
私たちはその地域の仏壇店の一つである井上仏壇店さんに今回彦根仏壇についてご紹介していただいた縁で、先週行われたフェスティバルへの参加のお誘いを受けました。
このフェスティバルでは体験ワークショップを通じ、参加者が仏壇製作に関わる技術の一片に触れることができるようになっています。 通常、仏壇には非常に凝った装飾が施されており、彫刻や仏壇の胴体製作から始まり、漆塗り、金箔押しや金粉蒔き、彫刻、そして飾り金具取付などと続きます。 このような様々な職人技が必要なため完成までには数か月かかり、また値段も自動車を購入するくらいに匹敵します。
私たちは午前と午後、二つの体験ワークショップに参加しました。午前のワークショップでは蒔絵作り、午後は漆塗りを重ねて鉄ぽい風合いを作る箸作りに挑戦しました。 漆は皮膚かぶれを起こす自然の毒素を持っていますが、漆塗りではその毒素は取り除かれています（しかし、非常に敏感な肌の方は漆塗りの工程でかぶれてしまうかもしれません）。 この二つのワークショップ以外にも、金箔押し、レリーフ作り、木工などがありました。 参加はできませんでしたが、それらのワークショップも面白そうでした。
